Students organized cultural bazaars to promote Chinese culture
Editor’s Note
Increased people-to-people exchanges are a sure way to eliminate estrangement and promote mutual understanding. This year, several social practice teams at Tsinghua University organized “Chinese New Year Cultural Bazaars” in different places to celebrate Chinese New Year with international friends and promote Chinese culture.
The achievements of rural revitalization travel as far as Chile
The Center for Global Competence Development at Tsinghua University was invited to attend the 2024 “Happy Chinese New Year” Dragon Year celebration.

During the celebration, the team displayed postcards printed with bilingual New Year blessings, which featured photos taken by students from the Rural Vitalization Center and the social practice teams of the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University. Through the exhibition, they hope to present a true, multi-dimensional, and panoramic view of China to the Chilean people.
While displaying the photos, Gu Enqiao, a 2020 undergraduate student from the School of Law, encountered a Chilean lady who hoped to learn to write her Chinese-born grandfather’s surname, which is “Ye (叶)”. After checking the dictionary, Gu Enqiao wrote both the simplified and traditional characters for the word “Ye (叶)” on the back of the postcard selected. He said, “Whether in China or Chile, our names are always about who we are. The lady is not only looking for her Chinese surname but also seeking her identity and belonging.”

Sharing traditional Chinese culture on the streets of France
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations, the “Beautiful Paris Spring Fair” was in full swing. Members of the L’Art Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Team in France and Italy also participated in the fair. They showcased cultural and creative products and wrote Spring Festival couplets. Intrigued by these fascinating exhibits, visitors stopped at the booths to inquire about the stories behind the exhibits and the team members.

Chen Jingyuan, a sophomore from the Academy of Arts & Design, stated, “Chinese culture is ubiquitous during the event. At the market, regardless of where you come from, you are equally connected to and embraced by Chinese culture and the culture of the Spring Festival.”

Dragon’s dream of the Silk Road and blessings abound in the global village
Prince Sultan University collaborated with the “Qing Exploration Saudi” overseas social practice team from Tsinghua University to organize a cultural fair featuring Chinese New Year traditions.

“Dragons dream of the Silk Road; Blessings fill the global village.” This couplet was written by students from the team. With the Chinese New Year approaching, they wrote couplets and gave them to the local students as gifts. They also wrote foreign students’ and teachers’ names in Chinese, which immediately sparked everyone’s interest.

At the end of the event, Mr. Ahmed, the president of Prince Sultan University, came to the scene and expressed high praise for the Chinese cultural market. Li Yuhuan, a 2022 undergraduate student at Weixian College, hoped that in the future he could engage in more international communication so as to better tell China’s story and listen to the beautiful diversity of voices around the world.
Interchanges between youths and communications between cultures
During the winter break of 2024, Tsinghua University organized and supported 45 student social practice teams, comprising a total of 697 faculty and students. These teams headed to 27 countries across six continents, engaging in diverse and vibrant cultural exchange activities and forging heartfelt connections with young people from around the world. Through these experiences, they gained a deeper understanding of the allure of different cultures. This endeavor promotes mutual learning and exchange among civilizations, contributing to the creation of a brighter future for the youth.
